Berlin to Lutherstadt/Wittenberg

On 26 December 2011, I went to Lutherstadt by train.  The town is about 1 hour by train south of Berlin.  Unfortunately, as it was a public holiday, many places were closed or opened late, but we still got to see a few very interesting things.
Green!  I see green!
When you register with our university, you also get a 6 month ticket on Berlin's public transport.  We could use this pass up to the town shown on the screen.  Our return journey cost us 8.40 euro which I didn't think was too bad for a day trip.
As we went past a wind farm.  Yes, that is what those white things are.
This quaint street scene is not from the historic altstadt yet, I think.  But pretty, hey?
All the street signs in the old city are in this Gothic font.  The other sign is the normal font.
Plaques on every building with names of people who went to the college or lived in Lutherstadt.
Luther house.  Unfortunately, it only opened at 2pm so we had a few hours to kill.
Lovely entrance way into the building
Very decorative
Some history on Luther house.  The map at the bottom shows all the places and sights in the town.   I find the "you are here" arrow especially useful.
Entrance to a library attached to Luther house.  It is still in use.
Think this is College avenue in the old city.
Look this lovely entrance way.
I love all the old buildings around this square.
All the places you could go and see in the town.
On our way to the church where Luther made history by
History of the church but it's most well known for where Luther posted 95 these against the indulgences system in the Catholic Church.
The door against which he posted the 95 theses.  Unfortunately, there was a tour bus right in front of the church so I couldn't get a good picture of the full door.
Timeline featuring this church.  I didn't take pictures inside the church because one had to pay to do that.
Another cute street.  Note the canal running down the length of the street.
The running water in the canal creates a lovely, peaceful atmosphere

Some nice facades.
Interesting door.
Interesting way to indicate the cycle shop below.

Feel like Lutheran food?  Nope, not sure what Lutheran food is.
Love the old wall.
Old wall inside the courtyard of the Luther house.
Eventually we got to go inside the Luther house and go through the exhibition on Luther.  Here are some interesting snippets:

Luther depicted on 3 sides of this boxy thing.  Maybe it was from where he preached?  Pity I didn't take a picture of the information thingy.
Old stairway with interesting window shape.

Amazing to consider that this page was printed in the early 1500s

Some detail of this old piece of clothing.

Wow, nearly 500 years old.

An interactive display of the university lectern.
And here is the real lectern.

Some details

Luther and his wife, Katharina von Bora
This is her rosary

Hand painted detail in Luther's living room
One side of the living room. Apparently regular discussions with other scholars took place around this table.  His wife was an active participant.
Interactive display of the book below.  Really makes it interesting.

A picture of Luther after he had died.
All the different additions to the original building uncovered.
A part of that wall illustrated above.

The backyard.
And ready to go back home.

    1. Hi Johannes. I was thinking that I need to go to Dresden for a day or two before I go. You can go to my other blog to the About Me or one of the other pages for my email address. Thanks for the offer.
